Tuberculosis (TB) Test

Tuberculosis (TB/PPD) test in Houston, TX. For work and school, in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

The tuberculosis skin test (PPD) is the one hospitals, schools, daycares and some employers usually ask for before you start. At Clínica Hispana Cruz we place it, read it and give you a document with the result for your paperwork, with every step explained in Spanish or English.

How does the PPD test work?

A very small amount of a liquid called tuberculin is injected just under the skin of your forearm. If your body has been in contact with the tuberculosis bacteria, a small firm bump forms in that spot. What gets measured is that firmness, not the redness.

What are the steps?

  1. Placement visit: the medical team reviews your history and gives the injection in your forearm.
  2. You get your reading date, which under health guidelines falls two to three days later.
  3. Reading visit: the reaction is measured with a ruler and the result is recorded.
  4. You receive the documentation to hand to your employer or school.

How do you care for your arm in the meantime?

  • Don't scratch or rub the spot even if it itches
  • You can shower as usual; just pat it dry
  • Don't cover it with a bandage, cream or ice
  • Don't miss your reading visit: once the window passes, the test has to be repeated

What does a positive result mean?

A positive PPD means you were exposed to the bacteria at some point, but it doesn't mean you have active tuberculosis or that you're contagious. People who got the BCG vaccine as children sometimes react too. In that case the medical team guides you on the next tests, such as a chest X-ray or a blood test, and gives you a referral if needed.

If you've had a cough for several weeks, night sweats or unexplained weight loss, mention it at the first visit. Bring an ID and the form your job or school gave you; placement can be done any day from 9 AM to 9 PM, so pick a day when you can come back for the reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The BCG vaccine doesn't rule out the test, although it sometimes causes a positive reaction. Mention it at placement; if the result is positive, the medical team explains which extra test your paperwork calls for to sort it out.

Yes, the skin test is considered safe during pregnancy. Still let the medical team know so they note it in your record and, if the result is positive, guide you on next steps with both you and the baby in mind.

The reaction can only be measured within a short window; once it passes, the result is no longer valid and the test has to be placed again. That's why it's best to get it on a day when you know you can return for the reading.
