Thyroid Testing & Treatment

Thyroid testing and treatment in Houston, TX. Lab tests and follow-up in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

The thyroid is a small gland in your neck that sets the pace of your metabolism. When it runs slow (hypothyroidism) or too fast (hyperthyroidism), you feel it in your energy, weight, skin and mood. Here it is checked with blood work and, when needed, treatment is started and fine-tuned.

Which signs point to the thyroid?

  • Fatigue that doesn't lift even after a good night's sleep
  • The scale moving up or down while your meals stay the same
  • Hair falling out more than usual, dry skin or brittle nails
  • Wearing a sweater when nobody else at home is chilly, or sweating with the AC running
  • A racing heart, shaky hands or feeling on edge
  • Low mood, foggy thinking or changes in your period

What does the blood test measure?

The starting point is TSH, a signal from the brain asking the gland to speed up or slow down. When TSH comes back out of range, the medical team may also order T4 and T3 to see how much hormone your gland is actually making. Together, those values separate an underactive thyroid from an overactive one.

How should you prepare for the blood draw?

  1. Mention it if you take biotin or hair-and-nail supplements: they can skew the result, and pausing them for a few days beforehand is sometimes advised by the medical team.
  2. If you're already on thyroid treatment, check whether that morning's pill goes before or after the needle stick.
  3. Keep photos of older TSH results on your phone, even from another country: they help with comparison.

How does treatment continue?

  • An underactive thyroid is usually treated with a daily pill that replaces the missing hormone
  • The dose is adjusted based on follow-up blood work, repeated a few weeks after each change
  • Timing matters: swallow it before breakfast with water, keeping your morning coffee and any calcium or iron tablets for later
  • If the thyroid is overactive, a lump appears in the neck or the numbers call for it, a referral to a specialist is arranged

You'll hear from us as soon as your results arrive. If your tiredness has no clear reason, stop by the Airline Drive clinic any day between 9 AM and 9 PM and start with a TSH.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Biotin, common in hair and nail supplements, can interfere with some lab tests and produce misleading values. Tell the medical team if you take it so they can advise whether to pause it before your blood draw.

Your body needs a few weeks to settle on a new hormone dose. Checking TSH at that point shows whether the amount is right or needs to go up or down a little.

It is usually taken in the morning on an empty stomach with water only, waiting a while before breakfast. Keep it apart from coffee, calcium and iron, which can lower how much your body absorbs.
