Ultrasound uses sound waves to build images of what's inside your body, with no radiation and no needles. At Clínica Hispana Cruz we do abdominal, pelvic, pregnancy, and thyroid or soft-tissue ultrasounds, and we explain in Spanish or English what is on the screen and what the study is for.
Which areas can be checked?
- Abdomen: liver, gallbladder and kidneys, for example with pain after meals or suspected stones
- Pelvis: uterus, ovaries and bladder, when there is pelvic pain or irregular bleeding
- Pregnancy: tracking the baby's growth and follow-up
- Thyroid and soft tissues: lumps in the neck or bumps under the skin
How do you prepare for each study?
For the abdomen you're usually asked to skip food for several hours, since the gallbladder shows up better without food and with less gas. For the pelvis and some early pregnancy scans you'll need a full bladder: drink water beforehand and hold it until the scan is done. Thyroid and soft-tissue scans need no prep.

What do you feel during the scan?
Once you're lying down, a warm gel is spread on your skin and a small wand is moved across it while the images appear on a monitor. The wand presses a bit, more so if you arrived with a full bladder, though it isn't painful. Most scans are over quickly and you can go right back to your day.
Is it safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Because it uses no radiation, ultrasound is the imaging test routinely used to check on the baby at different stages of pregnancy. Bring your earlier studies and the date of your last period so the follow-up is more complete.
What happens after the ultrasound?
The medical team explains the findings and what they mean for your health. If the scan shows something that needs another test, treatment or a referral to a specialist, we guide you on the next step. Since some ultrasounds require fasting, the first hour after we open at 9 AM is usually the easiest time to come.
