Men's Health: Prostate (PSA) Exam

Men's health in Houston, TX: prostate (PSA) exam, general checkup and lab work in Spanish, walk-ins welcome, no insurance needed.

Many men only see a provider once something already hurts. This checkup is designed to look at your prostate, your testosterone levels and your overall health early, with the medical team explaining each result in plain Spanish or English.

What does the checkup include?

  • A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test
  • A testosterone level, when your symptoms make it worthwhile
  • Blood pressure, pulse, weight and waist size
  • Questions about how you urinate, sleep and how your energy is
  • A referral to a specialist if any result calls for it

Which symptoms are worth bringing up?

Getting up several times at night to pee, a weak stream, feeling that your bladder doesn't empty or burning when you urinate can come from the prostate. Constant tiredness, lower sex drive or erection problems also deserve a look, since they're sometimes tied to blood pressure, blood sugar, weight or hormones.

How should you prepare for the blood draw?

  1. Come in the morning if testosterone is being measured, since levels are highest early in the day.
  2. For two days before a PSA test, avoid ejaculation and cycling or hard workouts, which can nudge it up.
  3. Mention a recent urinary infection or any prostate or hair-loss medicine you take.
  4. Bring earlier PSA results if you have them: the trend over the years says as much as a single number.

What does a high PSA mean?

It isn't a cancer diagnosis. PSA can rise from an enlarged prostate, inflammation or infection. That's why the medical team reads it alongside your age, symptoms and earlier results, and decides whether to repeat it or arrange a referral to a specialist.

At what age should you start?

Common guidance puts the PSA conversation at 50, moved earlier when a father or brother had prostate cancer and for Black men, who carry higher risk. The PSA and testosterone samples are processed by an outside lab, and you get a call once the numbers are in. The Airline Drive clinic stays open until 9 PM, so you can come straight from work.

Frequently Asked Questions

No fasting is needed for PSA. What helps is avoiding ejaculation and cycling or heavy exercise for two days beforehand, and mentioning any recent urinary infection, since that can raise the number.

Not necessarily. An enlarged prostate, inflammation or an infection can raise it too. The medical team reads it with your age and symptoms and decides whether to repeat the test or arrange a referral.

It can come from an enlarged prostate, drinking fluids late, high blood sugar or certain medicines. It's worth checking: your history, a urine test and a PSA usually make the cause clear.
