Women's Health in North Houston: Checkups and Gynecology
Pap smears, vaginal cultures, birth control, pregnancy tests and arm implant removal in north Houston: what each service covers and when to come in.
Reviewed by the Clínica Hispana Cruz medical team
Clínica Hispana Cruz offers north Houston the everyday gynecology care most women need through the year: Pap smears and gynecological checkups, vaginal cultures, infection treatment, birth control, pregnancy testing and arm implant removal. Every visit happens in a private exam room, in English or Spanish, with no appointment and no insurance required.
This guide sorts those services by life stage or reason for your visit, so you know what to ask for when you arrive.
If You're Coming In for a Routine Checkup
Pap smear
A Pap smear (Pap test) looks for changes in the cells of the cervix that, caught early, can be monitored or treated before they turn into a problem. General guidelines set when to start and how often to repeat it based on your age and past results; the clinic's medical team will tell you which schedule applies to you. The CDC explains cervical cancer screening at cdc.gov/cervical-cancer.
Mammogram order
During the checkup you can get a mammogram order when one is indicated, along with a referral to the facility that performs it.
Getting the most out of the visit
- Write down the first day of your last period.
- Bring results from any earlier Pap smear if you have them.
- Skip douching and sex for the days just before the test, unless you've been told otherwise.
If You Have Intimate Discomfort
Itching, burning, unusual discharge or odor are common reasons women come in, and there's no reason to put up with them. The clinic evaluates those symptoms and, when needed, takes a vaginal culture to find out what's behind the infection (yeast or bacteria, for example) so the right treatment can be chosen. Medications recommended during your visit are provided at the clinic.
If you also feel burning when you pee or need to go constantly, it may be a urinary tract infection, which is checked with a urine test. And if you're worried about a possible sexually transmitted infection, the clinic offers confidential STD testing.
If You're Considering Birth Control
| Situation | What the clinic offers |
|---|---|
| You want to start a method | Personalized guidance and a side-by-side look at options based on your health and plans. |
| You prefer the pill or the shot | Getting started and follow-up. |
| You have side effects or questions | A review of what you're feeling and adjustments if needed. |
| Your arm implant expired or you want to switch | Subdermal implant removal under local anesthesia. |
The decision is yours. The visit is there so you can make it with clear, judgment-free information. More on the birth control page.
If You Think You Might Be Pregnant
A pregnancy test can be done with urine or blood; the urine test gives a result in minutes. Once it's confirmed, the team walks you through next steps and prenatal care, with a referral when appropriate.
When Not to Wait
These situations can't wait for a clinic visit; head to an emergency room or dial 911:
- Very heavy vaginal bleeding with dizziness or fainting.
- Severe lower belly pain, especially if you could be pregnant.
- High fever with intense pelvic pain.
And book a visit soon, even if it isn't an emergency, if you notice a breast lump, bleeding between periods or after menopause, or pain during sex that doesn't go away.
What the Visit Looks Like
- Walk in and check in at the front desk.
- Head to a private exam room, with care in English or Spanish.
- Get the test or procedure that matches your reason for coming in.
- Leave with clear instructions and, if needed, your treatment.
- Learn how and when you'll get results for anything sent to the lab.
If a result calls for it, you'll be guided toward a specialist referral.
